I wanted to share my very raw story in hopes that it might inspire you to take big action in your life.

Long story, short: Something really tragic happened and I finally woke up and took the leap to start a floral business.

Let me tell you the whole story:

I had been a full-time florist for over 10 years and had dreamt of starting my own business. 

When I considered starting my own floral business I'd think - "I'm just not ready yet. I have no idea how to start...so I'll wait until I know how."

Until one day, I got a call on my way to work. 

I heard my mom's shaking voice over the phone- she told me that my dad had been diagnosed with cancer and it didn't look good. 

I had to pull over to process the information. I was pretty hysterical and I desperately wanted to visit so I could help my mom and possibly say goodbye if it came to that.

I pulled back onto the road and continued driving to work. I walked into my manager's office, with tears streaming down my face, and asked her when I could leave to say goodbye. 

Her response shocked me (and it is why I now own my own business!).

She said, "Let's look at the calendar...Okay...it looks like you are leading weddings every weekend for the next few months...I'll have to let you know what I can work out because I don't really have anyone to take over, so I really don't see a good time for you to go."

Still in shock, I mumbled, "Okay, let me know." And I left her office. 

Later that evening I processed the conversation more and it dawned on me how ridiculous it was that my job as a florist was trapping me to this extent- I wasn't free to do something so important as saying goodbye to my dying father. 

I waited a few days, feeling powerless, and my manager didn't bring it up. I felt so emotional that I didn't want to bring it up and lose control at work. I talked to my mom and the treatment wasn't working and his health was progressing for the worse. 

I did some research and discovered I could fill out FMLA paperwork to take medical leave - this paperwork would protect me from getting fired and I could leave ASAP.

I left and made it just in time to say goodbye. I held his hand as he passed, processing everything I had just experienced and realized- "I cannot ever feel this trapped again. This isn't what life is about." 

About one month later I quit my job and started my business. I had no plan. I had no savings. I was actually in debt (I don't recommend, but anything is possible!). 

I still think about my dad often and thank him for everything- including this lesson he left me with that finally forced me to take a leap and believe in myself.

Once I had started my business I realized how truly ready I actually was! I took my 10 years as a florist for granted, but I knew how to build my website, what I needed to include, how to sell to clients, how to close big deals, how to order flowers on a budget, lead weddings and more. I grew my business from 0 to $100k in 12 months and I was elated that the freedom I desired WAS possible. 

After years of running my own business and loving every minute of it, I realized how badly I wanted this for everyone else. To feel in control of your time, your energy, your freedom...is truly invaluable. I love helping other florists get there and have worked with literally thousands of incredible flower-lovers to build the business of their dreams.
